War on drugs

Re "Understaffed LAPD struggles to break up Valley drug market" (March 4):

It seems that the LAPD and residents have tried everything to prevent the sale of illegal drugs in this North Hills neighborhood, to no avail. Perhaps they are missing an obvious solution. Some 70 years ago, this country determined that preventing its citizens from ingesting a foreign substance was not worth the crime and bloodshed it brought. The 21st Amendment to the Constitution was passed, repealing alcohol prohibition and removing the black market, which funded the violent gang wars infecting the streets of cities across America.

It is time to end this failed war on drugs.
