The Libertarian Party is a very open, “democratic” organization. Decision making power is in the hands of anyone willing to sign the oath of office and pay the dues.

Why the oath?

  1. In order to maximize Liberty, the initiation of force, including that done by the government, must be minimized. In order to keep the Libertarian Party in the direction of Liberty, we ask that Central Committee members sign the oath.
  2. Since peaceful change is possible in our society, Libertarians advocate peaceful change.

Libertarians understand that the initiation of force, in various forms, by government to try to solve social, economic or political problems makes things worse and is unjust. Though Libertarians sometimes disagree about what constitutes an initiation of force, Libertarian central committee members should not be indifferent to it.

Realistically, the initiation of force will not be ended immediately, and may never be completely eliminated. However, when given a political choice, Libertarians select the choice that most reduces the initiation of force and most reduces the size, scope and invasiveness of government, even if choosing between imperfect options. Libertarians understand that the option that involves the least initiation of force is invariably the best option.

Hence, Libertarians work to lower your taxes, keep our nation at peace, protect your individual rights, end the drug war, protect your right to keep and bear arms, reduce burdensome regulations, and protect your privacy rights. The Libertarian Party advocates for freedom of choice in education, health care and retirement, and for a stable monetary system and free-market economic system.
